Thomas Baines is well known in southern Africa as a mid 19th century traveller and explorer, artist and diarist. In his lifetime he produced an enormous number of paintings and sketches some of which have seldom been seen by the public. Jane Carruthers sought to remedy this and her book is illustrated with some of his lesser known works.

They cover the years 1848 - 1852 and although George Brooks Bennett's time in the eastern cape was 10 years after this period, it is hoped that these few illustration will provide the reader of my book with a glimpse of the type of scenery in which he lived and travelled.

The pictures have been photographed directly from the book and this has meant that some go across the centrefold with the consequent flaws in the picture for which I apologise.
