news articlesManchester United confirmed the signature of David De Gea from Athletico Madrid for a rumoured £18m. The Spanish keeper has just come back from the U-21 tournament where Spain beat Switzerland in the final.

De Gea only made his senior debut for Athletico 2 years ago as a subsitute in a Champions League game against Porto. Since then he has gone onto make nearly 100 appearences for the Spanish club.

Following the transfer De Gea spoke of his pride at joining Man Utd. "I feel very proud and I can't wait to start playing here. When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you, it obviously makes you very, very happy. I'm keen to do my best and show what I can do."

Ferguson also confirmed his belief that De Gea can live upto his potential, speaking to manutd.com he said "He's a young goalkeeper, very quick, good composure, presence and an outstanding replacement for Van der Sar,"

"We were looking for the same type of qualities as Edwin, because the one great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability."

The goalkeeper will likely make his debut when he travels with the club on their US tour. He will be competing with Anders Lindegaard for the number 1 jersey, it was reported at the beginning of the month the Danish number 1 was fined by the club for missing the bus the day after the Champions League final. However unlike De Gea he has represented his country at a senior level and at 27 has had more experience.

Let us what you think  about De Gea, and whether he was your choice for Van Der Sar's replacement.
