Manchester United’s CL future in doubt as they fail to win against Benfica PDF Print E-mail

match report

Manchester United 2 – 2 Benfica

Manchester United's stuttering Champions League campaign has delivered another unwelcome result as a Benfica side full of adventure and attacking verve secured the point that leaves Sir Alex Ferguson's team requiring a draw in Basel in two weeks' time to be sure of qualification for the knock-out stages. That result should not be beyond United, but Pablo Aimar's second-half equaliser means Benfica will be guaranteed top spot in Group C if they can defeat Otelul Galati, irrespective of the outcome in Switzerland.

match report

Swansea City 0 – 1 Manchester United

Manchester United are clambering back to their feet. After being floored in humiliating fashion by Manchester City a month ago, they have now won five matches in a row without conceding a goal. City's swagger is becoming ever jauntier but at least their lead at the top of the Premier League is not getting any bigger. United may not be playing with panache but they are securing points.

match report

Manchester United 1 – 0 Sunderland

Manchester United made sure that Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25th anniversary at the club was a day to remember by winning all three points against Sunderland. The red devils did about just enough on the field, although even that could have proved to be insufficient had former Man United defender Wesley Brown not headed the ball into his own net.

match report

Manchester United 2 - 0 Otelul Galati

Manchester United struck early and late to secure an uninspiring 2-0 Champions League win against Otelul Galati at Old Trafford. Antonio Valencia opened the scoring in the eighth minute, and Wayne Rooney made the result safe with a deflected effort on 87 minutes that may go down as an own-goal.

match report

Everton 0 – 1 Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson promised a response from Man United after their derby disarray last Sunday, although, disappointingly, it was Everton who failed to find one in this tame encounter. The United manager also suggested it would be a hard game – but it was not. Unusually in the recent history of this fixture, Everton went a goal down and could not come up with a reply. There was no fightback, no stirring of supporters' passions to set the old ground rocking, just a quiet acceptance of the fact that, even playing within themselves, United were strong enough to take the three points.

match report

Otelul Galati 0 – 2 Manchester United

Manchester United finally claimed their first win in this Champions League edition after Wayne Rooney scored twice from the penalty spot in Romania. The striker scored his 25th and 26th goals in the European competition, overtaking his former teammate Paul Scholes to become the highest scoring Englishman in the Champions League. Both sides were also reduced to 10 men in an eventful second half, with Nemanja Vidic being sent off with 25 minutes left, while Perendija saw red for the hosts in the final minutes of the match.
